Alexandra Reese's Growth Guide

Actionable insights to improve your leadership, life, and impact

Welcome to the 20th edition of the Growth Guide! Today's edition is all about community.

If you’re rolling your eyes at this word, I get it. Once marketers co-opted the word community, for many it became a dirty word that connotes commercialization and inauthenticity.

But community—in its purist form—is absolutely essential. It's fuel on the fire of your leadership growth journey. And that’s why community and culture is the topic of this upcoming series of Growth Guides.

If you received the Growth Guide from a friend or colleague, welcome! If you like what you read, you may subscribe here

In case you missed last week’s edition, I’d like to share a very exciting announcement: Coaching Essentials for Leaders is now open for registration! Through this experience, you will sharpen coaching skills in four key areas:

  1. Self Leadership
  2. People Leadership
  3. Courageous Conversations
  4. Strategic Agility

If you’re ready to unleash your energy, creativity, and performance, while building life-long relationships with growth-minded leaders, this opportunity is for you.

One year ago (almost to the day!), I attended a two-day event that changed everything.

I had the privilege of attending Alan Weiss’ Six-to-Seven event. Over two days, thirteen fellow business owners and I learned cutting-edge strategies to grow our businesses from six to seven figures.

I’ve used the strategies, tactics, tips, and tricks I learned to transform my business over the last 12 months. And while immensely valuable, these insights were not the most valuable product of the experience.

It was this very special group of people who quite literally changed my life.

It can be lonely at the top. Whether you're a founder, CEO, single parent, or team leader, you need the right support network. We all need coaches, advisors, mentors, champions, and confidants. But particularly when you’re at or near the top, where you may not have peers within your organization to be your thought partner, challenge you, and push the bounds of your potential.

Eight of us from this event have continued to meet over the last year to propel each other’s growth. We meet the first Thursday of each month to share updates, celebrate wins, and provide real meaningful support. It’s among my highlights every month.

My wins have been much sweeter and my disappointments much easier because of this group. They inspire me, challenge me, and lift me up when I need it. I would not be where I am without these seven lovely people.

As a leader, it's solely your responsibility to create community.

It’s an unfortunate truth that most organizations do not proactively offer coaching, mentorship, and developmental support for leaders, especially as they advance up-the-ladder (1). So, it’s not surprising that many leaders feel isolated. And that their performance and mental health suffer as a result.

If you want to excel, you must cultivate your own community. In addition to those you hire for support, like coaches and advisors (see Growth Guide 15 for advice on how to get that right), you may want to build community with other growth-minded leaders. People who have walked in your shoes are in a unique position to:

  • Provide mutual support
  • Celebrate your wins
  • Encourage you
  • Get you out of your bubble
  • Challenge your thinking
  • Tell you the brutal truth

Do you have a community that provides this critical feedback and support? If not, are you really getting the support you need to reach your full potential?

When you're ready to strengthen your community, there are two ways I can help:

If you’d like to build lifelong relationships with other growth-minded leaders, I invite you to join Coaching Essentials for Leaders. When you attend all four workshops, you’ll unlock an immersive cohort experience that provides meaningful opportunities for you to build relationships for long-lasting mutual support.

If you’d like to build community within your organization, stay tuned for next week’s Growth Guide. I’m kicking off a new series on how to build a vibrant organizational culture, specifically in hybrid and remote work environments.
